twa inspired jackets
The Historic Costume and Textile Museum is home to a growing collection of Trans World Airlines (TWA) uniforms. TWA chose prestigious clothing designers to create uniforms worn by the flight attendants, beginning with Kansas City native Stan Herman. Later the airline chose Hollywood designer Howard Greer, Oleg Cassini, American sportswear designer Don Loper, French couturier Pierre Balmain, Italian couturier Valentino, and later American designers Elisa Daggs and Ralph Lauren.
Second-year students examine the collection for inspiration to modify a jacket pattern, resulting in a remix of the past and present. The collection was donated in loving memory of Janet Lee Rees by her husband Richard, KSU ’61 and ’64.
