TWA Inspired Jacket & JEans

“The purpose of the Janet Rees-inspired Jacket that I completed this semester in FASH410 was to be able to put a spin on a classic pattern while being inspired by garments from the past. I learned how to alter the pattern to fit my body while also altering the pattern itself to go along with my inspiration. The purpose of the jeans project was to introduce new design students to basic sewing techniques and to make alterations to patterns. Unlike the jeans project, I had more control over what materials I was picking and how I wanted to alter the pattern. The primary method of sewing the jacket and jeans was with the lockstitch but there was also some hand sewing as well. The outcome of this jacket was a success because it fit my body well and it also shows that it was inspired by the TWA jackets, specifically the Valentino designs. The outcome of the jeans was also a success because I usually struggle to find jeans that fit my waist and my thighs, but these jeans fit perfectly. The jacket and jeans represent the theme of empowerment because making your own clothing gives students the opportunity to show their creativity and hard work. It also shows how we can look to the past to create innovative designs that are more modern and up-to-date. Without the opportunities that Kansas State University gave me, I would not have had the outlet for my creativity.”
