Formation of a Butterfly

“The purpose of this project was to create a digital booklet of no less than three ensembles centered around our chosen theme and then to use our patternmaking skills to create one of the chosen looks. My theme was based on mental health, mainly on depression, named Formation of a Butterfly. I decided to focus on creating a look that focused on removing the dark layers of depression, to lighter and skin revealing to show the freedom and happiness after overcoming depression. I changed many things when creating the booklet to match my patternmaking skills as well as to advance my knowledge. After the booklet, I moved on to the physical garment which was quite difficult as it was my first time working with leather, so any mistakes made proved to be disastrous causing me to remove or rethink part of the garment. In the end, I was able to create a leather corset and shorts using my knowledge of patternmaking. This project connects well with Our 150-year Legacy of Excellence & Empowerment because women who pioneered in this program used patternmaking skills to create garments of their own and for their clients. They faced difficulties in making corsets and dresses showing that this is not a new skill but one we have adopted and continue to use to further our skills as fashion designers.”
