off the table
“The purpose of Off the Table was to address a sustainable design approach through research and the production of an original ensemble. Inspired to upcycle, I chose to use a Goodwill find as the main fabric for my design. The tablecloth I found was stained in many places, and while no longer suitable for one’s table, it was perfect for the collection. To construct my chosen ensemble, I created my pattern with draping methods. When working with the tablecloth, I used exposed seams to add contrast and increase visual interest. Furthermore, I made design modifications to avoid damaged areas of the fabric being used for the skirt. The outcome is a pastel eveningwear set, which highlights the value of upcycling as a way to create a product of higher quality as opposed to being downcycled or discarded. Regarding excellence, I appreciate the opportunity to study sustainable design and feel confident in my ability to use even more sustainable design methods in the future.”
