“The purpose of the jeans project was to learn how to create a fit for oneself while also learning alternation techniques. The purpose of the zero-waste top and jacket was to learn how to fully make use of a fabric cut without putting any fabric pieces to waste. These two strategies are important as learning to create a fitting garment can then allow for one to be more sustainable as they grow their strength in right-fitting garments. The jeans posed quite a struggle as it was the first sewing class, but it also allows designers to know what could have been done to fix minor alteration problems. The struggle with the zero-waste top and jacket was having the ability to use all the given fabric while also challenging the creative side of the brain. These two projects showcase Our 150-year Legacy of Excellence & Empowerment because students before us were learning to alter clothing for a perfect fit. In addition, they were also learning patchworking which is a type of strategy belonging to sustainability.”
