4th and Yuma: The Black Experience in manhattan, ks

“The purpose of this project was to create conceptual and commercial looks and an accompanying booklet based on black history in Manhattan, Kansas. Extensive research into the black history of Manhattan, KS was conducted and then synthesized into garments that embodied the geographical and social climate of the area, post-reconstruction. Techniques used were draping, quilting, and applique. This resulted in a cohesive micro-collection that portrayed black history in Manhattan, Kansas. This project embodies the showcase theme by exhibiting black excellence in the city of Manhattan and at Kansas State University from the start of reconstruction.”
