BUILDING EMPOWERMENT
“The purpose of this project was to design a clothing collection that featured sustainable methods while celebrating the 150-year legacy of Kansas State University and the Fashion Studies department. The selected focal points of the legacy are buildings on campus that are named for the pioneering women that molded the department. The sustainable methods are upcycling scrap material and zero waste silhouettes. The upcycling of scrap materials was accomplished with a flat seam stitch on a home serging machine. Scrap pieces were flat seamed together to create larger pieces of cloth. The outcome resulted in the successful formation of a bomber jacket with under 30 grams of textile waste. This project embodies the excellent legacy of the pioneering and empowering women of the Kansas State University Domestic Sciences – which is currently known as Fashion Studies at Kansas State University.”
