Fashion aesthetics
First year students learn foundational skills in aesthetics, graphic design, and Adobe software which are applied in two projects. For the Met Gala board, students research the style of a celebrity, select potential on trend looks for the event, while generating an overall mood. For the Brand Booklet, students research a fashion brand’s current branding aesthetic, marketing, and overall trends. Students then curate a collection of images that showcase the brand aesthetics in a fresh and trend forward booklet.
Fashion Consumption Behavior
Students investigate the problem of overconsumption in the fashion industry and in their own lives by participating in and documenting a month-long commitment to one of the following practices. Wardrobe Diet: wear only a selected 10-20 clothing items. Fashion Detox: abstain from purchasing new clothing. Sustainable Style: identify or design a wardrobe representing personal values, aesthetic and a commitment to sustainability principles.
Swap & Style
To practice sustainable consumption solutions student teams swapped garments and then restyled or upcycled garments into new looks.
Social media, Personal branding, & retail marketing
Second year students build their branding, adobe software, and graphic design skills along with social media, personal brand graphics, and a retail marketing campaign. The Social Media Management Board is a mood board that visually represents a brand’s identity and sample social media posts. The Personal Brand Package communicates the student’s professional brand through logos, color palette, and typography on a business card, letterhead, thank you card, and website. For the Marketing Campaign, a retailer’s brand message is communicated through a merchandise mailer and promotional event posts.
Fashion Forecasting
The future of fashion is forecasted for a specified product category and target market. This upper-level semester long project includes story and methods, action points, color story, textiles and materials, key garment silhouettes, parts, and details.
sustainable fashion business
In this capstone project for the fashion business specialization, students work in small teams to develop a holistic business plan for a fashion retailer. At the core of the proposed business is sustainable retail practices, with all proposals being required to focus on developing a business around circular fashion principles and concepts. Other parameters for the project are that the retailer must be in Manhattan, KS and it must be a traditional brick-and-mortar store. Over the course of the semester, utilizing knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout their fashion studies courses, the students conduct competitor and target market analyses, develop their sustainability business strategies, and utilize trend forecasting to create a merchandising and source plan. The teams also build extensive marketing strategies and put together visual merchandising plans. The project culminates in a poster and oral presentation of their work.
