Our Clothing Consumption

“The purpose of our clothing consumption project was to analyze and evaluate our personal consumer behaviors. By analyzing our consumer behavior we were both able to understand more deeply what motivated our behaviors. Then we evaluated how these behaviors satisfied specific needs we each held. Once we each had a better understanding we tried to improve our poor consumer behaviors. For example, we each severely overconsumed which leads to harmful environmental effects. Therefore, to correct this behavior we both tried to borrow clothes for events from friends instead of buying a new outfit each time. This project required a lot of self-reflection and our personal shopping data over the Fall 2021 semester. We communicated to agree on similar consumer behaviors, motivators, why we wanted to change the behaviors, and what changing them would lead to. We came to the conclusion that consuming less and purchasing from more sustainable retailers would have a positive impact on our world… both environmentally and socially. We also recognized that our small changes could not undo the damage already done, this change would take time to have an impact. Our impact would also be better by educating the people around us on how to sustainably consume too.

The Interior Design and Fashion Studies Showcase of Excellence theme: 150 year legacy of excellence and empowerment. Our project embodies this theme because we strived to the best of our abilities to come together and create a project that exceeded expectations. We put in great effort to produce something that we could both be proud to present to our peers. As we also mentioned in our project we would like to empower others to make more conscious consumer decisions. We can inspire people with our own findings to make a change. ”
